Who we need
We are recruiting for a Communication Support Worker to join our Inclusion & Support team and work closely with both students and curriculum colleagues. This is a part time role (working days to be confirmed upon student requirements), where you will play an integral part in the delivery of a high-quality educational experience.
Key responsibilities of the role will include:
Provide interpretation to our D/deaf & VI learners in and out of the classroom, including liaising between learner and Lecturer.
To provide support for D/deaf & VI students during activities outside the classroom, including for example residential trips, travel training, exams, inductions and visits.
Mentor and develop colleagues reporting to the Specialist Sensory Tutor and undertake appropriate training for colleague development.
To undertake initial assessments including environmental adaptations and materials. Assess individual D/deaf &VI learners communication linguistic needs.
To assist in the development of support plans and provide support, both direct and indirect, for D/deaf & VI students with a variety of hearing & VI losses, in the learning environment, and on an ongoing 1:1 basis outside class.
What you’ll bring
You will have experience of interpreting & supporting D/deaf & VI students within an educational environment, particularly within post 16 education.
You will demonstrate patience, empathy and kindness as you will be supporting learners in a fast-paced environment. You will work flexibly and as part of team to ensure that learner support needs are met. Communication skills will be key as you will be working with colleagues across different departments, often to meet tight deadlines.
It is essential that you hold a Level 2 BSL qualification or equivalent and can evidence this at interview. It is desirable that you have VI awareness for this role.
Please note that you would be required to work across all Nottingham College sites as part of this role.
