Early Career Teacher of English - Vibrant Secondary...
A forward-thinking 11–18 secondary school in Nottingham is seeking an enthusiastic and reflective Early Career Teacher of English to join its thriving English faculty. The school has built a strong local reputation for literacy development, purposeful classrooms and a leadership team that genuinely invests in staff growth.
This is an excellent opportunity for an ECT to begin their career in a department where collaboration, creativity and consistency are valued equally.
The Role
You will teach English across Key Stages 3 and 4, delivering a knowledge-rich curriculum that balances canonical literature with diverse modern voices. Schemes of learning are carefully sequenced, meaning you will have strong foundations to build upon while still having the freedom to bring your own personality and flair to lessons.
The department places a strong emphasis on explicit vocabulary instruction, extended writing practice and structured discussion. Students are used to high expectations and respond well to clear routines and purposeful teaching.
Induction & Mentoring
The school has an excellent record of supporting Early Career Teachers through a structured two-year induction programme. You will benefit from:
• A reduced timetable in line with ECT entitlement
• A dedicated English mentor with weekly instructional coaching
• Shared planning time within the department
• Access to literacy-focused CPD and exam board training
• Opportunities to observe experienced practitioners across the school
There is a culture of open doors and professional dialogue, ensuring that new teachers feel supported rather than isolated.
The School Environment
Located in a well-connected area of Nottingham, the school serves a diverse community and is proud of its inclusive ethos. Behaviour systems are consistent and senior leaders are highly visible around the school, creating calm and orderly corridors and classrooms.
The English department benefits from well-resourced classrooms, a centralised bank of teaching materials and strong GCSE outcomes that reflect careful curriculum planning. Enrichment opportunities include debating competitions, theatre visits and creative writing workshops.
The Ideal Candidate
• Holds QTS and a degree in English or a related subject
• Has strong subject knowledge and a passion for reading and writing
• Is reflective, organised and eager to develop as a practitioner
• Values teamwork and consistency
Why This Is a Strong First Post
You will join a school where your training continues beyond qualification, where feedback is constructive and where your enthusiasm for English will be welcomed and nurtured.
If you are ready to start your teaching career in a supportive and ambitious Nottingham school, please submit your CV to apply.
