Residential Support Worker

The Residential Support Worker plays a vital in supporting young people in their day-to-day lives. Staff act as positive models, providing guidance, emotional support, and practical help. This includes supporting children with routines such as attending school, developing life skills, participating in activities and outings, and even accompanying them on trips or holidays. The also involves safeguarding the welfare of children and ensuring they feel safe to share concerns or disclose information when needed.

Duties and responsibilities
- Provide consistent day-to-day care and emotional support to children and young people in the residential home
- Act as a positive model, demonstrating patience, empathy, and understanding
- Support young people with daily routines, including attending school, personal care, and developing life skills such as cooking and cleaning
- Act as a key worker for assigned young people, building trusting relationships and supporting individual care plans
- Plan and accompany children on activities, outings, and trips, including holidays, to promote social development and positive experiences
- Encourage positive behaviour and help children build confidence and independence
- Safeguard and protect the welfare of children, following all policies and procedures
- Maintain accurate records and reports regarding care, progress, and any incidents
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, social workers, schools, and other professionals to support the needs of young people
Skills and experience
- A genuine interest in supporting children and young people and helping them develop life skills, confidence, and independence
- Ability to build positive relationships and act as a supportive, patient, and understanding model
- Willingness to undertake training and gain relevant qualifications, such as a Level 3 in Child Development, if not already held or have something equivalent.
- Good communication skills, with the ability to listen, guide, and respond appropriately to children and young people
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children, and a willingness to learn and follow policies and procedures
- Flexibility to support children with daily routines, activities, outings, and holidays
- Ability to work as part of a team while also using initiative to meet the needs of young people
- A positive attitude and a commitment to personal development, professional growth, and improving outcomes for children
