Head of Geography - Secondary School - Nottingham

Marchant Recruitment
Nottingham

An established and well-regarded 11–18 secondary school in Nottingham is seeking an inspiring and strategic Head of Geography to lead its successful Humanities faculty. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Geography teacher ready to step into leadership, or for an existing Head of Department looking for a new challenge within a supportive and forward-thinking school environment.

The school serves a diverse and engaged community and has built a strong reputation locally for academic progress, high expectations and a calm, purposeful learning culture. Geography is a popular and growing subject, with strong GCSE uptake and increasing interest at A-Level.

The Role

As Head of Geography, you will take full responsibility for the strategic direction, curriculum design and outcomes of the department. You will lead a small but committed team of teachers, ensuring consistency, challenge and clear progression across Key Stages 3–5.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Leading curriculum planning to ensure a knowledge-rich, well-sequenced Geography programme
• Driving progress and attainment at GCSE and A-Level
• Monitoring assessment, feedback and intervention strategies
• Coaching and developing departmental colleagues
• Managing fieldwork planning and enrichment opportunities
• Reporting to SLT on performance and departmental priorities

The department already benefits from a stable curriculum model and shared planning systems, giving you a strong foundation to refine and elevate standards further.

The Department

Geography sits within a collaborative Humanities faculty, alongside History and Religious Education. The team values intellectual curiosity and real-world application, linking global issues to local case studies across Nottingham and the wider East Midlands.

Students respond particularly well to enquiry-based learning and structured debate. Fieldwork is embedded at both KS3 and KS4, with established trips to urban and rural locations to support physical and human geography units.

The department has:

• Dedicated Humanities classrooms
• Access to digital mapping and GIS resources
• A consistent assessment framework
• Strong GCSE results with improving Progress 8 contribution

The School Environment

This Nottingham secondary school has clear behaviour systems, visible leadership and a strong pastoral structure. Staff retention is good, and colleagues describe the culture as “professional, ambitious and supportive.”

The senior leadership team is committed to developing middle leaders and offers structured CPD, leadership coaching and genuine opportunities for progression.

Classrooms are calm, expectations are high, and teaching is valued.

Who We’re Looking For

The successful candidate will:

• Hold QTS and have strong subject knowledge in Geography
• Demonstrate a track record of strong GCSE outcomes
• Show evidence of leadership potential or experience
• Be confident using data to inform intervention
• Inspire students through engaging, rigorous teaching
• Value collaboration and professional development

Experience teaching A-Level Geography would be advantageous but is not essential.

Why Apply?

• Established department with strong foundations
• Supportive senior leadership and leadership development pathways
• Motivated students and strong behaviour systems
• Real opportunity to shape curriculum direction
• Competitive salary with TLR attached

This is a genuine opportunity to lead a Geography department within a stable, ambitious Nottingham school that values academic rigour, professional trust and long-term development.
