Head of Mathematics - Nottingham

Marchant Recruitment
Nottingham

A well-established 11–18 secondary school in Nottingham is seeking an experienced and driven Head of Mathematics to lead one of its largest and most influential departments. This is a significant leadership opportunity within a school known locally for strong academic progress, a calm and purposeful learning environment, and a clear, values-led approach to education.

Mathematics is a cornerstone subject within the school, with consistently strong GCSE outcomes and growing A-Level uptake. The department is well staffed, stable and supported by senior leadership who understand the central role of Maths in whole-school success.

The Role

As Head of Mathematics, you will provide strategic direction, operational leadership and academic oversight for the department across Key Stages 3–5.

Your responsibilities will include:
• Leading curriculum design to ensure clarity, progression and challenge
• Coaching and developing teaching staff through regular instructional support
• Driving GCSE and A-Level performance through data-informed interventions
• Ensuring consistency in assessment, marking and feedback practices
• Overseeing revision planning, exam readiness and stretch provision
• Contributing to whole-school improvement priorities

The department works within a structured and well-sequenced curriculum model. Schemes of learning are centrally planned but continuously refined by the team, balancing consistency with professional autonomy.

There is a strong focus on mastery, fluency and problem-solving, with deliberate practice embedded across all year groups.

The Department

The Mathematics faculty is one of the school’s largest teams, comprising experienced subject specialists and developing teachers. It benefits from:

• A dedicated Maths corridor creating a clear departmental identity
• Shared online planning platforms with centralised resources
• Interactive teaching technology in all classrooms
• Strong collaboration with SEND and intervention teams
• A culture of open-door teaching and peer observation

The team meets weekly for subject-specific CPD, focusing on curriculum clarity, modelling techniques and improving exam performance.

The School

This Nottingham secondary school serves a diverse catchment and is proud of its inclusive ethos. Behaviour systems are structured and consistent, ensuring teachers can focus on teaching rather than managing disruption. Leaders are visible, supportive and proactive in reducing unnecessary workload.

Recent school improvements have focused on curriculum coherence, behaviour consistency and staff development. Middle leaders are empowered and supported, and there is a strong track record of internal promotion.

Who We’re Looking For

The successful candidate will:
• Hold QTS and a relevant Mathematics degree
• Have a proven record of strong outcomes at GCSE (A-Level desirable)
• Demonstrate leadership experience, either formally or through department contribution
• Be confident using data to drive performance and close gaps
• Lead with clarity, organisation and professional integrity
• Be committed to high expectations for all learners

This role would suit an existing Head of Maths or an experienced Second in Department ready for promotion.

What’s On Offer

• Competitive salary with substantial TLR
• A well-established and high-capacity team
• Strong SLT backing and clear improvement priorities
• Excellent CPD and leadership development
• A structured school culture that supports academic success

This is a high-impact leadership role within a stable and ambitious Nottingham secondary school where Mathematics sits at the heart of the curriculum.
